Solar Energy
What you need to know about solar lights
How do solar lights work?
The solar panel converts the suns energy into an electric current that charges the rechargeable batteries in the light. The batteries then supply the required power to illuminate the LED. A solar light will generally illuminate for 8 hours during the night.
The main components of a solar light are:
- the panel and its circuitry
- batteries
- LED
Solar Panels
There are various types of solar panels used on solar lights, most commonly known are Crystalline or Amorphous panels. Each type has its strengths and weaknesses.
Crystalline panels are more efficient at converting the suns energy tousable power but are more expensive than an Amorphous panel.
An Amorphous panel will charge in daylight regardless of whether it has direct or indirect exposure to the Sun, whereas a Crystalline panel needs direct exposure.
Nicad Batteries
Olsent solar lights use Nicad batteries. Nicad batteries will normally accept up to 500 recharges so their life expectancy is approximately 18 months before replacement.
LED Bulbs
LED’s consume less power than conventional globes. Under standard conditions, an LED will last around 100,000 hours.
